When your hairline starts to move back, or the crown looks thinner in a photo, it is natural to wonder whether a vitamin could help. Many men start there, because it feels like a simple first step. Vitamins can make a real difference when a shortfall is part of the cause. That said, the most common reason men's hair thins is not a lack of nutrients, so it helps to know what vitamins can and cannot do.

Key Takeaways

At a glance
  • Hereditary thinning is the most common cause in men. MedlinePlus notes that more than half of men over 50 have some degree of hair loss.
  • Vitamins help most when something is low. Zinc, vitamin D and biotin matter for hair, and the clearest benefits come in people who are short on them.
  • Men need less iron than women. A men's daily need is 8 mg, so iron supplements are usually taken only when a test shows a need.
  • Saw palmetto has limited evidence for men's hair. The NIH notes only a few small studies.
  • Men can take hair, skin and nails vitamins. It is worth checking the iron, biotin and sugar on the label.

Why Men's Hair Thins

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) calls male pattern hair loss the most common cause of hair loss in men. MedlinePlus, from the US National Library of Medicine, explains that it often starts above the temples, where the hairline recedes into an "M" shape. Hair may also thin at the crown. It can begin as early as the teens, and the risk rises with age. It is linked to genes and to hormones called androgens.

Other causes are often temporary. The AAD notes that shedding can follow a high fever, surgery, major stress or losing 20 pounds or more. It also lists thyroid problems, some medicines, and not getting enough biotin, iron, protein or zinc. These can happen on their own or alongside hereditary thinning.

What Vitamins Can and Cannot Do

When hair loss comes from a shortfall, correcting it can help hair recover. Reviews of the research find the clearest links between hair and nutrients like zinc, vitamin D, iron and biotin in people who are low in them.

Hereditary thinning is different, because its cause is genes and hormones rather than a missing nutrient. Vitamins do not change that cause. The AAD notes that men who get help soon after they notice hair loss tend to see better results. It adds that other conditions can look similar. So if your hairline or crown is changing, a visit to a dermatologist is a helpful early step, whatever else you decide.

The Nutrients That Matter Most for Men's Hair

Nutrient What the Research Shows Men's Daily Amount Hair Radiance (3 capsules)
Zinc Hair loss is a known sign of zinc deficiency. Evidence for extra zinc without a deficiency is limited. 11 mg 20 mg
Vitamin D Some studies found lower levels in people with certain kinds of shedding. Results are mixed. 15 mcg (600 IU) 62.5 mcg (2,500 IU)
Biotin Helps hair when someone is low in it, which is uncommon. 30 mcg 3,000 mcg
Iron Low iron is linked to shedding, though men need less than women. 8 mg Not included
Selenium Needed in small amounts. Too much is linked to hair loss. 55 mcg 200 mcg

Zinc

The NIH lists hair loss among the signs of zinc deficiency. Men need about 11 mg a day, and the adult upper limit is 40 mg. The NIH also notes that 50 mg or more a day, over weeks, can lower copper levels. Hair Radiance has 20 mg.

Vitamin D

Several studies have found lower vitamin D levels in people with certain types of hair shedding. A 2019 review in Dermatology and Therapy called the results mixed, though, and said larger trials are needed. Hair Radiance has 62.5 mcg (2,500 IU) of vitamin D3, below the adult upper limit of 100 mcg (4,000 IU).

Is Biotin Good for Men?

Biotin works the same way in men and women. In a 2017 review, researchers found 18 reported cases where biotin helped hair or nails, and every person had an underlying condition, such as a biotin deficiency. The authors found too little evidence to recommend it for healthy people. Hair Radiance has 3,000 mcg. The FDA has warned that high doses can affect some lab tests, including a heart test called troponin, which is worth knowing for men of any age.

Saw Palmetto and Men's Hair

Saw palmetto is a palm berry extract that many men's hair products include. The NIH's National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) notes that a few small studies have tested it for male-pattern hair loss. Some gave it by mouth, and others applied it to the scalp. It adds that the evidence is too limited to draw conclusions. NCCIH describes side effects as mild and infrequent, and it notes that saw palmetto does not appear to affect PSA test results.

Hair Radiance contains 240 mg of saw palmetto (4:1 extract). Studies have used different amounts and types of extract, so their results may not apply to any one product.

Can Men Take Hair, Skin and Nails Vitamins?

Yes. The vitamins and minerals that support hair are the same for men and women, though the daily amounts differ a little. Three things are worth checking on the label. First, iron: men need 8 mg a day, so a formula with added iron may give more than you need. Second, biotin: most hair products contain far more than the Daily Value. Third, sugar: many gummies contain a few grams per serving.

Our article on hair, skin and nails gummies covers this in more detail.

Where Hair Radiance Fits

Hair Radiance is made for adult men and women. It combines vitamins, minerals, Ayurvedic herbs and three probiotic strains in one formula.* A serving is three vegetarian capsules with no added sugar, and it contains no iron.

About Hair RadianceEach ingredient has been studied on its own, and some of the herb amounts are lower than the amounts used in those studies. Hair Radiance has not been clinically tested as a finished product, so we cannot say how its ingredients work together. It is not a substitute for a dermatologist's advice about hereditary hair loss. See the Hair Radiance product page.

Good to Know

Before you startMost men take hair vitamins without trouble at the amounts on the label. Three things are worth knowing. First, tell your doctor you take biotin before any blood test, as the FDA has warned it can affect some results. Second, NCCIH notes that saw palmetto can occasionally cause digestive upset, dizziness or headache. Third, if you have a thyroid condition or take medicines, a quick check with your doctor or pharmacist is a good idea, because Hair Radiance contains iodine.

If You Are Deciding

It can help to start with a dermatologist, especially if your hairline or crown is changing. A dermatologist can tell whether the pattern looks hereditary or points to another cause, and may suggest blood tests for zinc, vitamin D or thyroid levels. If a shortfall turns up, correcting it is the clearest step.

If you choose a hair vitamin, look for an amount next to every ingredient and nutrients within their upper limits. Then give it time. Hair grows about half an inch a month, according to MedlinePlus, so changes take a few months to show.

The Short Version

Most men's hair thinning is hereditary, linked to genes and hormones, and vitamins do not change that cause. Vitamins help most when a shortfall is part of the picture, with zinc, vitamin D and biotin the most studied. Men need less iron than women, and saw palmetto has only limited evidence for hair. A dermatologist visit early on, and a clear label, are a sound place to start.

Frequently Asked Questions

What vitamins help men's hair growth?
The nutrients with the most research are zinc, vitamin D, biotin and iron, along with enough protein. They help most when a man is low in them. A blood test can show whether that applies to you.
Is biotin good for men's hair?
Biotin helps when someone is low in it, which is uncommon with a varied diet. A 2017 review found reported benefits only in people with an underlying condition. It works the same way in men and women.
Can men take hair, skin and nails vitamins made for women?
Usually, yes, since the nutrients are the same. Check the iron, because men need 8 mg a day and some formulas add more. Check the biotin and sugar too.
Will hair vitamins help a receding hairline?
A receding hairline in men is most often hereditary, linked to genes and hormones rather than a missing nutrient. Vitamins help when a shortfall is part of the cause. A dermatologist can tell you which applies, and the AAD notes that early help tends to give better results.
Is saw palmetto good for men's hair?
A few small studies have tested it for male-pattern hair loss, but NCCIH says the evidence is too limited to draw conclusions. Side effects are usually mild.
How long do hair vitamins take to work for men?
Hair grows about half an inch a month, so any change takes a few months to see. Steady daily use gives you the fairest picture.
