Grape seed extract is made from the seeds of wine grapes and contains proanthocyanidins, also called OPCs. In a search of about 1,000 plant extracts for hair, researchers found that proanthocyanidins from grape seeds promote the growth of hair follicle cells — more than doubling cell growth in the lab and starting a new growth phase in mice.

- Grape seed extract contains proanthocyanidins. These are the compounds studied for hair [1][2].
- Researchers screened about 1,000 plant extracts for hair. Proanthocyanidins from grape seeds were identified as promoting hair follicle cells [2].
- In the lab, they raised mouse hair follicle cell growth to about 230% of control. In mice, they moved resting follicles into the growth phase [2].
- Scalp blood flow was lower in early hair loss. In one small study, men with early pattern hair loss had 2.6 times lower scalp blood flow than men without it [3].
- Hair Radiance contains 80 mg of grape seed extract with 95% proanthocyanidins. It is one of 22 ingredients [5].
Here is what the studies show, and how the 80 mg in Hair Radiance fits.
Facts at a glance
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| Ingredient | Grape seed extract (Vitis vinifera), 95% proanthocyanidins [5] |
| Amount in Hair Radiance | 80 mg a day, in 3 capsules [5] |
| Kinds of evidence | A lab/mouse hair follicle study; a separate human study on scalp blood flow and hair loss [2][3] |

What is grape seed extract?
Grape seed extract is made from the seeds of wine grapes. It contains proanthocyanidins, plant compounds that may have a range of helpful effects [1].
The proanthocyanidins in grape seeds are built from two smaller units, catechin and epicatechin [2].
Does grape seed extract help hair growth? What the research shows
The research is still growing.
In the lab and in mice, grape seed proanthocyanidins started a new growth phase (1998)
Researchers screened about 1,000 plant extracts for their effect on hair follicle cells. They identified proanthocyanidins from grape seeds as active [2].
In the lab, they raised the growth of mouse hair follicle cells to about 230% of untreated cells [2].
In mice, they moved resting follicles into the growth phase. The authors called this activity remarkable. They concluded that grape seed proanthocyanidins could possibly be used to support hair growth [2].
Blood flow and hair loss
Researchers have asked whether blood flow plays a role in hair loss. A 1989 study measured blood flow under the scalp in 14 men with early pattern hair loss and 14 men without it. Flow was 2.6 times lower in the men with hair loss [3].
The authors suggested that reduced blood flow to the follicles might play a part in early pattern hair loss [3]. No study has tested whether grape seed changes scalp blood flow.
Study summary
| Study | What was used | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Takahashi et al., 1998 [2] | Grape seed proanthocyanidins on mouse hair follicle cells and in mice | Cell growth to ~230% of control; follicles entered the growth phase |
| Klemp et al., 1989 [3] | Scalp blood flow measurement in 14 men with early pattern hair loss vs. 14 without | Blood flow 2.6x lower in the hair-loss group (grape seed not tested) |
How much grape seed extract is in Hair Radiance?
Hair Radiance provides 80 mg of grape seed extract a day, standardized to 95% proanthocyanidins [5]. That is about 76 mg of proanthocyanidins. The hair study used the compounds in mouse cells and mice, so it does not set an amount to take by mouth [2].
22 ingredients, including 80 mg of grape seed extract
Hair Radiance is a daily three-capsule supplement that pairs grape seed extract with green tea, ginkgo and other plant extracts. Every ingredient and amount is listed on the label.
See Hair RadianceIs grape seed extract safe? Safety and interactions
Grape seed extract is generally well tolerated by mouth [1]. Little is known about its safety during pregnancy or breastfeeding [1].
Grape seed has antiplatelet activity, which means it may slow blood clotting. It may also affect how the body breaks down some medicines [4]. People who take blood thinners such as warfarin should talk with a health care provider before use [4].
Grape seed extract is one part of Hair Radiance
Hair Radiance is a daily three-capsule hair growth supplement with 22 ingredients: vitamins, minerals, plant extracts, an amino acid and three probiotic strains. They were chosen to support healthy hair growth, to help promote silky, smooth hair, and to strengthen and maintain healthy hair. Grape seed extract is one of them.
Hair Radiance has not been clinically tested as a finished product. For this reason, we cannot say how its ingredients work together.
Hair Radiance is made in Phoenix, Arizona, in a cGMP-certified facility. Every ingredient and amount is listed on the label [5].
If you are deciding
Here is the case in brief. In a search of about 1,000 plant extracts for hair, grape seed proanthocyanidins were identified as active [2]. They more than doubled mouse hair follicle cell growth in the lab and started a new growth phase in mice [2]. We found no study of grape seed extract for hair in people. Hair Radiance supplies 80 mg a day, standardized to 95% proanthocyanidins [5].
The short version
Grape seed extract contains proanthocyanidins. In the lab and in mice, these compounds boosted mouse hair follicle cells and started a new growth phase. Hair Radiance provides 80 mg a day.
