Echinacea for Acne-Prone Skin: What the Research Shows and Why ClearDerm Includes It

In the lab, echinacea killed acne bacteria and calmed inflammation. Here is what the human research shows and how ClearDerm includes it.

Two things play a part in breakouts: bacteria in the pore and the redness that follows. In lab tests, an echinacea extract stopped the main acne bacterium from growing. It also calmed the inflammation signals that the bacterium set off in human cells. [1] ClearDerm with Probiotics includes echinacea as one part of a 22-ingredient formula, to help promote clear skin. [2]

Key takeaways
  • In the lab, echinacea worked on two fronts. It killed acne bacteria and calmed inflammation in cells. [1]
  • In one acne trial, a plant blend with echinacea helped. People taking lupeol plus echinacea had 40% fewer inflamed spots after 8 weeks, against 10% on placebo. [3]
  • ClearDerm provides 50 mg of echinacea (whole plant), alongside probiotics and zinc. [2]

What is echinacea?

Echinacea, or purple coneflower, is a group of plants native to North America. [7] Native Americans used it for respiratory infections, tooth pain and snakebite. [4]

It is sold mainly for colds [4] and is used on skin wounds in traditional medicine. [8]

How echinacea relates to acne-prone skin

In a 2011 lab study, a standardized Echinacea purpurea extract killed a lab strain of P. acnes, the main acne bacterium. It also killed P. acnes taken from patients. P. acnes is now called Cutibacterium acnes. [1]

The bacterium made human skin and airway cells release inflammation signals, such as IL-6 and IL-8. The extract brought them back to normal. [1]

The research is still growing. These were cells in a dish, with one brand, Echinaforce. [1] We do not know yet how much of this happens when echinacea is taken by mouth.

What the studies show

Acne: a probiotic and plant supplement (2022)

In an 8-week trial, 114 people with mild to moderate acne took placebo or one of three supplements. [3]

One group took plant extracts alone: lupeol, from eggplant, plus echinacea. Their inflamed spots near the skin surface fell by 40%, against 10% on placebo. [3]

The group taking plant extracts with three probiotic strains had the largest drop, 57%. Probiotics alone gave 39%. The abstract does not say whether the groups differed from each other. [3]

Echinacea was not tested by itself in this trial. The paper does not report how much echinacea the supplement contained. [3]

Skin creams

In one study, a cream with echinacea compounds called alkylamides eased eczema signs. [5] NCCIH says the eczema evidence is unclear. [4]

Colds

A 2014 Cochrane review of 24 trials found no clear benefit for treating colds. Some products may give a weak benefit for preventing them, of doubtful importance. [6]

How much echinacea is in ClearDerm?

Two capsules provide 50 mg of Echinacea purpurea, whole plant. [2] Powder or extract: [FORM REQUIRED].

Echinacea products differ in species, plant parts and extraction, so results from one may not apply to another. [6]

Is echinacea safe?

For adults, Echinacea purpurea extract products are likely safe for short-term use, according to NCCIH, part of the NIH. [4] A 2016 review found no reported toxic effects in studies of daily use for up to 6 months, though results may differ by product. [9]

  • Side effects. Stomach upset and rashes are the most common. [7]
  • Allergy. Rare allergic reactions can be serious. [4][7] In Australian reports, more than half of people with such reactions were prone to allergies. [10]
  • Autoimmune conditions. Lab and animal studies show echinacea can activate immune cells. Case reports link such herbs to flares of lupus and other autoimmune skin conditions. [11]
  • Pregnancy, nursing and medicines. Little is known about nursing. Pregnant people and anyone taking medicine should check with a health care provider. [4]

Echinacea is one part of ClearDerm

ClearDerm with Probiotics is a daily two-capsule skin supplement with 22 ingredients: vitamins, minerals, plant extracts, an enzyme and six probiotic strains. They were chosen to promote clear skin, support a clear complexion and support the gut–skin connection. [2]

In the 2022 trial, the group taking plant extracts and probiotics together had the largest drop. [3] That product used other probiotics and lupeol, so its results do not apply to ClearDerm directly.

ClearDerm has not been clinically tested as a finished product. When you take it, you are not relying on one ingredient alone.

ClearDerm is made in Phoenix, Arizona, in a cGMP-certified facility. Every ingredient is listed on the label, and the probiotic blend is given as one total. [2]

Good to know

A few points help you use ClearDerm well: take ClearDerm with food and water, as the directions say; [2] if you also take another echinacea product, such as a cold remedy, tell your doctor or pharmacist; and if you have allergies (including to ragweed or daisies), asthma or an autoimmune condition, are pregnant or nursing, or take any medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist before you start. Good to know Whether ClearDerm's 50mg echinacea is a powder or an extract isn't yet confirmed (yellow flag) — this matters because echinacea products vary a lot by species, plant part and extraction method.
