Key takeaways
  • Curcumin is the main compound in turmeric root. It is one of three related compounds called curcuminoids [2].
  • Inflammation is common around thinning hair follicles. In data on pattern hair loss, about 71% of scalp samples showed inflammation [4].
  • In 32 trials, curcumin by mouth lowered two markers of inflammation. TNF-α and IL-1 fell compared with placebo [5].
  • Hair studies so far applied curcumin to the skin. In mice it started a new growth phase. In people with patchy hair loss, a scalp blend with curcumin was followed by regrowth [6][7].
  • Hair Radiance contains 60 mg, with black pepper extract. For a 70 kg adult, that is less than one third of the European acceptable daily intake [8][9].

Here is what the research shows, and how the 60 mg in Hair Radiance compares with safe limits.

What is curcumin?

Turmeric is a plant in the ginger family, grown in India and Southeast Asia [1]. Its root has a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine for inflammatory conditions [2].

The root contains three curcuminoids. Curcumin is the main one, and it gives the spice its yellow color [2]. Researchers credit most of its effects to two actions: lowering inflammation and acting as an antioxidant [10].

Why does inflammation matter for hair?

Each hair grows from a follicle in the skin of your scalp. Immune cells can gather around the follicle. Researchers suggest that these cells may disturb the hair growth cycle [4].

In pattern hair loss

Pattern hair loss is the most common cause of hair loss, affecting nearly 80 million people in the US [4].

A 2020 article looked at scalp tissue data on pattern hair loss in men and women. The data showed immune cells, such as lymphocytes and histiocytes, around the hair follicles [4]. In one data set it describes, about 71% of samples showed inflammation [4].

The review also points to inflammatory genes, including the gene for TNF. The authors concluded that inflammation is a core part of pattern hair loss in men and women [4].

In patchy hair loss

Alopecia areata makes hair fall out in patches. A 2011 study measured a marker of inflammation, TNF-α, in 60 people with this condition and 20 people without it. Levels were significantly higher in the people with hair loss [11].

How does curcumin work?

Curcumin acts on many of the signals that drive inflammation [2]. In lab studies, it blocks several of them, including COX-2, prostaglandins and TNF [3].

In people, curcumin lowered TNF-α and IL-1 (2021)

A 2021 analysis pooled 32 randomized trials in which people took curcumin or turmeric by mouth. Compared with placebo, curcumin significantly lowered two markers of inflammation in the blood: TNF-α and IL-1 [5].

It did not significantly change two other markers, IL-6 and IL-8 [5]. The trials measured inflammation in general, not hair.

It also acts as an antioxidant

Inflammation and oxidative stress feed each other. Inflamed tissue releases reactive molecules, and these add to the stress [10].

A review of trials found that curcuminoids improved markers of oxidative stress, including the antioxidant enzymes SOD and catalase [10]. Four of the six trials in that analysis added piperine [10].

Does curcumin help hair growth? What the research shows

The research is still growing. We found no trial yet of curcumin by mouth for hair. The hair studies so far applied curcumin to the skin.

In mice, curcumin on the skin started a new growth phase (2016)

Researchers applied curcumin to the skin of mice while their hair follicles were resting. Curcumin started a new growth phase, called anagen [6].

This was a short report at a scientific meeting, not a full paper [6].

In people, a scalp blend with curcumin led to regrowth (2022)

A trial enrolled 60 people with patchy hair loss. Half applied a blend of curcumin, piperine and capsaicin to the scalp twice a day. Half applied 5% minoxidil, a medicine sold for hair loss, once a day. The trial ran for 3 months [7].

Both groups had significant regrowth compared with the start. The response rate was 63.3% in the blend group and 70% in the minoxidil group. The authors said the blend was not shown to be better than minoxidil [7].

Side effects were temporary, and no serious adverse events occurred [7].

What about DHT?

DHT is a hormone linked to pattern hair loss [12]. We found no hair study of curcumin and DHT.

The closest trial used Curcuma aeruginosa, a different species from the same plant family. In 87 men, its extract was applied to the scalp for 6 months. On its own, it led to some regrowth. The clearest results came when it was used with minoxidil [12].

Study summary

Study What was used Result
Wang et al., 2016 [6] Curcumin on the skin of mice Started a new hair growth phase
Mao et al., 2022 [7] Curcumin, piperine and capsaicin on the scalp; 60 people; 3 months Significant regrowth; 63.3% response rate

Why is curcumin paired with black pepper?

Curcumin is hard for the body to absorb, because the liver and gut break it down quickly [13]. When people took 2 g of curcumin alone, blood levels were very low or could not be measured [13].

Piperine, a compound from black pepper, changes this. In the same study, adding 20 mg of piperine raised the amount of curcumin reaching the blood by 2,000% [13].

Hair Radiance pairs its curcumin with 2 mg of black pepper extract, standardized to 95% piperine [9]. This is less piperine than the study used. The effect at the Hair Radiance amounts has not been measured.

How much curcumin is in Hair Radiance compared with the limits?

Source Amount a day Notes
Hair Radiance (3 capsules) 60 mg With 2 mg of black pepper extract [9]
European acceptable daily intake 3 mg per kg of body weight About 210 mg for a 70 kg (154 lb) adult [8]
Curcumin from a normal diet Less than 7% of that intake European estimate [8]
Human safety trials 1,125 to 12,000 mg Well tolerated [3][10]

For a 70 kg adult, 60 mg is about 29% of the acceptable daily intake [8][9].

Can a small amount help?

One study in healthy adults aged 40 to 60 used 80 mg a day of a better-absorbed form. It raised catalase, an antioxidant enzyme, in the blood [10]. Hair Radiance uses a standard form at 60 mg, which that study did not test.

The review authors concluded that a relatively low dose can provide health benefits for people without diagnosed health conditions [10].

Is curcumin safe? Safety and interactions

The NIH says regular curcumin by mouth is likely safe in recommended amounts for up to 2 or 3 months [1]. Because Hair Radiance adds black pepper extract, the liver caution below also applies. In the US, curcuminoids have GRAS status, meaning generally recognized as safe [10]. Trials found good tolerance at up to 12,000 mg a day [10]. European experts agreed that curcumin is not a cancer risk [8].

Possible side effects include nausea, vomiting, acid reflux, stomach upset, diarrhea and constipation [1]. In one dose study, headache and rash were also reported [10].

The NIH also notes a liver concern. Curcumin products made to be absorbed better, which often contain piperine from black pepper, may harm the liver. Liver damage has been reported in some people who took them [1]. Hair Radiance contains black pepper extract [9].

The NIH advises anyone who notices fatigue, nausea, poor appetite, dark urine or yellow skin to stop the product and talk with a health care provider [1].

The NIH says turmeric supplements may be unsafe during pregnancy. It also advises people who take any medicine to talk with a health care provider before using an herbal product [1].

Curcumin is one part of Hair Radiance

Hair Radiance is a daily three-capsule hair growth supplement with 22 ingredients: vitamins, minerals, plant extracts, an amino acid and three probiotic strains. They were chosen to support healthy hair growth, to help promote silky, smooth hair, and to strengthen and maintain healthy hair. Curcumin is one of them.

Hair Radiance has not been clinically tested as a finished product. For this reason, we cannot say how its ingredients work together.

Hair Radiance is made in Phoenix, Arizona, in a cGMP-certified facility. Every ingredient and amount is listed on the label [9].

Good to know
  • Take Hair Radiance with food, as the directions say [9].
  • If you take another turmeric or curcumin product, add up the amounts and compare them with the acceptable daily intake [8].
  • If you are pregnant or nursing, or if you take any medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist before you start [1][9].

If you are deciding

Here is the case in brief. Inflammation is common around thinning hair follicles [4][11]. Curcumin lowered two markers of inflammation in 32 human trials [5]. On the skin, it started a new growth phase in mice [6]. A scalp blend with curcumin was followed by regrowth in people with patchy hair loss [7]. Hair Radiance supplies 60 mg a day with black pepper extract, within the European acceptable daily intake [8][9].

The short version

Curcumin is the main compound in turmeric, and it lowered markers of inflammation in human trials. Inflammation is common around thinning hair follicles. On the skin, curcumin started a new hair growth phase in mice. Hair Radiance provides 60 mg a day, paired with black pepper extract.
