When your part looks a little wider, or your ponytail feels thinner than it used to, it is natural to look for something that might help. Many women start with vitamins, and that is a reasonable place to look. Women's bodies have some nutrient needs that differ from men's, especially for iron. That said, hair thins for many reasons, and vitamins help most when one of those reasons is a shortfall. Here is what the research and dermatologists say.

Key Takeaways

At a glance
  • Hair thins for many reasons. The American Academy of Dermatology lists heredity, childbirth, stress, thyroid problems, tight hairstyles and low nutrients among the common causes.
  • Iron deserves a close look. Women aged 19 to 50 need 18 mg a day, more than twice the amount men need, and low iron is common in women with hair loss.
  • Vitamin D, zinc, biotin and protein also matter. The clearest benefits come when someone is low in them.
  • Gentle hair care helps hair look fuller. Dermatologists suggest conditioner, less heat and looser hairstyles.
  • A blood test is a good first step. It can show whether iron, vitamin D or thyroid levels are part of the picture.

Why Women's Hair Thins

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) notes that hereditary thinning is the most common cause of hair loss in women. It tends to be more common after menopause, so hormones may also play a part.

Many other causes are temporary or can be addressed. The AAD lists these among the common ones:

  • Childbirth, illness, surgery or major stress, which can cause extra shedding a few months later
  • Hairstyles that pull tightly on the scalp, and harsh coloring, perming or relaxing
  • Thyroid problems, and hormone changes such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or stopping birth control
  • Some medicines
  • Not getting enough biotin, iron, protein or zinc

Because the causes differ so much, the AAD suggests seeing a dermatologist when hair loss is a concern. A doctor can help sort out which cause, or which mix of causes, applies to you.

The Nutrients That Matter Most for Women's Hair

Nutrient Why It Matters for Women Women's Daily Amount Hair Radiance (3 capsules)
Iron Low iron is common in women with hair loss. Heavy periods raise the risk. 18 mg (ages 19–50); 8 mg (51+) Not included
Vitamin D Some studies found lower levels in women with certain kinds of shedding. Results are mixed. 15 mcg (600 IU) 62.5 mcg (2,500 IU)
Zinc Hair loss is a known sign of zinc deficiency. 8 mg 20 mg
Biotin Helps hair when someone is low in it, which is uncommon. 30 mcg 3,000 mcg
Protein Hair is made mostly of the protein keratin. The AAD lists low protein as a cause of hair loss. Varies with body size L-cysteine 150 mg (an amino acid)

Iron

Iron is one of the nutrients most often linked to thinning hair in women. A 2019 review in Dermatology and Therapy noted that iron deficiency is common in women with hair loss. The NIH lists women with heavy periods and pregnant women among the groups most likely to run low. Women aged 19 to 50 need 18 mg of iron a day, compared with 8 mg for men.

Hair Radiance does not contain iron. Iron supplements are usually taken only when a test shows you need them, because too much can be harmful. The NIH sets the adult upper limit at 45 mg a day from all sources. If a blood test shows low iron, a doctor can suggest the right form and amount. Eating plant sources of iron with foods rich in vitamin C, such as citrus or peppers, also helps the body absorb it, the NIH notes.

Vitamin D

Several studies have found lower vitamin D levels in women with certain types of hair shedding. The 2019 review called the results mixed, though, and said larger trials are needed. Hair Radiance has 62.5 mcg (2,500 IU) of vitamin D3, below the adult upper limit of 100 mcg (4,000 IU).

Zinc and Biotin

The NIH lists hair loss among the signs of zinc deficiency, and women need about 8 mg a day. Hair Radiance has 20 mg, half the adult upper limit of 40 mg. Biotin is the most familiar hair vitamin, though a 2017 review found reported benefits only in people with an underlying condition. Hair Radiance has 3,000 mcg.

When More Is Not Better

It is easy to assume that extra vitamins can only help. The AAD notes that taking large amounts of vitamin A or selenium can cause hair loss. Hair Radiance has no vitamin A and 200 mcg of selenium, half the adult upper limit. If you take a multivitamin too, it is worth adding up both labels.

How to Help Hair Look Thicker

Alongside nutrition, how you care for your hair makes a visible difference. The AAD suggests a few simple habits:

  • Apply shampoo to the scalp rather than the full length of the hair, and use conditioner after each wash.
  • Treat wet hair gently, with a wide-tooth comb, and wrap it in a towel or T-shirt instead of rubbing.
  • Limit blow-drying, flat irons and curling irons, and use a heat-protecting product.
  • Choose looser styles, since hairstyles that pull tightly over time can lead to lasting hair loss.

These habits reduce breakage, so more of the hair you grow stays on your head.

Hair Radiance Is One Part of a Plan

Hair Radiance is made for adult women and men. It combines vitamins, minerals, Ayurvedic herbs and three probiotic strains in one formula.* It also contains saw palmetto. The NIH's National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) notes that saw palmetto has been studied mostly for men's hair. It adds that the evidence is too limited to draw conclusions.

About Hair RadianceEach ingredient in Hair Radiance has been studied on its own, and some of the herb amounts are lower than the amounts used in those studies. Hair Radiance has not been clinically tested as a finished product, so we cannot say how its ingredients work together. Because it has no iron, it is meant to sit alongside a diet with iron-rich foods, or an iron supplement if a doctor recommends one. See the Hair Radiance product page.

Good to Know

Before you startMost women take hair vitamins without trouble at the amounts on the label. Three things are worth knowing. First, the FDA has warned that high-dose biotin can affect some lab results, so tell your doctor you take it before any blood test. Second, NCCIH notes that saw palmetto may be unsafe during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so Hair Radiance is not meant for those times unless a doctor agrees. Third, if you have a thyroid condition or take medicines, a quick check with your doctor or pharmacist is a good idea.

If You Are Deciding

It can help to start with a visit to a dermatologist or your regular doctor. A few blood tests, often for iron stores, vitamin D and thyroid, can show whether a shortfall is part of the picture. If one is, treating it directly is the clearest step.

If you choose a hair vitamin, look for an amount next to every ingredient, and check that nutrients like selenium stay under their upper limits. Pair it with gentle hair care, and give it time. Hair grows about half an inch a month, according to MedlinePlus, so changes usually take a few months to show.

The Short Version

Women's hair thins for many reasons, from heredity and hormones to stress, childbirth and low nutrients. Iron deserves special attention, because women need more of it and low iron is common in women with hair loss. Vitamin D, zinc, biotin and protein matter too, and they help most when someone is low. A blood test, gentle hair care and a few months of patience are a sound place to start.

Frequently Asked Questions

What vitamins help with thinning hair in women?
The nutrients with the most research are iron, vitamin D, zinc and biotin, along with enough protein. They help most when a woman is low in them. A blood test can show which, if any, you need.
How can women make their hair thicker?
Start with the cause, since thinning from low iron or thyroid problems needs a different approach than thinning from heredity. Gentle care also helps: conditioner, less heat, and looser hairstyles reduce breakage, the AAD notes.
Should women take iron for hair loss?
Only if a test shows you need it. Low iron is common in women with hair loss, but too much iron can be harmful. A doctor can check your iron stores and suggest the right amount.
Is biotin good for women's hair?
Biotin helps when someone is low in it, which is uncommon with a varied diet. A 2017 review found reported benefits only in people with an underlying condition. High-dose biotin can also affect some lab tests.
How long do hair vitamins take to work for women?
Hair grows about half an inch a month, so any change takes time to see. Shedding after childbirth or stress often settles within six to nine months, the AAD notes.
Is Hair Radiance made for women?
Hair Radiance is made for adult women and men. It is not meant for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless a doctor agrees, because it contains saw palmetto.
