Bhringraj is a small plant with white flowers, also called false daisy. In India, traditional healers use it for hair loss and greying hair. Researchers have now tested it in people — in a 24-week trial, adults who took bhringraj extract tablets shed far less hair.

What is bhringraj?
Bhringraj is the plant Eclipta alba, also known as Eclipta prostrata. It belongs to the daisy family [1][6].
Traditional practitioners in India and nearby countries use it for hair loss, greying hair and other purposes [1].
Does bhringraj help hair growth? What the research shows
The research is still growing. It now includes two human trials and several animal studies.
In people, bhringraj tablets reduced hair shedding (2026)
A 24-week trial gave standardized bhringraj extract tablets by mouth to adults aged 18 to 55 with increased hair shedding. Of 54 people enrolled, 50 finished [2].
In a 60-second comb test, shed hairs fell from 72.4 to 27.1, a drop of 62.5%. Hairs counted in a weekly diary fell by 59.9%. At 24 weeks, 84% of the people said their hair had improved [2].
No serious adverse events occurred. Mild stomach discomfort went away on its own [2]. The trial had no placebo group, so everyone knew they were taking bhringraj [2].
In people, a scalp oil with bhringraj improved hair (2026)
A second trial enrolled 78 adults aged 18 to 55 with pattern hair loss, hair fall and greying. One group applied a traditional oil of bhringraj and other herbs to the scalp. The other groups used the oil with 5% minoxidil, a medicine sold for hair loss, or 5% minoxidil alone. The trial ran for 120 days [3].
In the oil group, hair growth rate, hair density and hair thickness improved significantly from the start, and the greying score fell [3]. This trial also had no placebo group [3].
In animals, bhringraj on the skin started hair growth
In rats, a cream with bhringraj extract halved the time for hair to start growing, compared with untreated rats. A third group used 2% minoxidil [4].
In mice with resting follicles, 87.5% entered the growth phase at the higher dose [1]. In nude mice, the extract made follicles larger and increased the cells that build the hair [7].
