Key takeaways
  • Grape seed extract comes from the seeds of wine grapes. Its main compounds are proanthocyanidins, which are also called OPCs [1][2][7].
  • In a double-blind trial, a formula with grape seed extract improved skin tone and gloss. The formula also had niacinamide, vitamin C and vitamin E, and the trial ran for 56 days [3].
  • In an 8-week study, a grape seed supplement was followed by more skin luminosity. Skin elasticity and firmness scores also improved [4].
  • In a 6-month study in men, skin showed more collagen and elastic fibers. The supplement supplied 27.5 mg of grape seed extract a day, with four other ingredients [5].
  • Dermal Radiance contains 50 mg of grape seed extract. The extract is standardized to 95% OPC [7].

What is grape seed extract?

Grape seed extract comes from the seeds of wine grapes, Vitis vinifera. It is sold as tablets, capsules and liquid extracts [1][2].

The seeds contain proanthocyanidins and smaller amounts of other plant compounds [2]. The Dermal Radiance label uses the short name OPC, which stands for oligomeric proanthocyanidins [7].

How might grape seed extract work in skin?

Antioxidant activity

In early human studies, grape seed extract raised the total antioxidant activity of the blood [2].

Collagen and elastin (lab and animal studies)

In lab and animal studies, the plant compounds in grape seed attached to collagen and elastin fibers and slowed their breakdown [4].

What does the research show?

The research on grape seed extract and skin is still growing. The human studies so far tested it together with other nutrients, and several of those nutrients are also in Dermal Radiance.

A 2024 trial with niacinamide, vitamin C and vitamin E

In 2024, researchers reported a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial in 70 Chinese women. One group took a formula with grape seed extract, niacinamide, vitamin C and vitamin E for 56 days, and the other group took a placebo [3].

Compared with placebo, skin tone and skin gloss improved in the formula group at 28 days and at 56 days. The researchers saw no clear unwanted effects [3].

A 2016 study on radiance

In 2016, an open-label study followed 35 women aged 40 to 70 who had a dull complexion. For 8 weeks, they took one capsule a day with grape seed extract, melon concentrate, vitamin C and zinc [4].

After 8 weeks, skin luminosity scores were 25.9% higher, and the score for skin imperfections was 18% lower. Skin elasticity rose by 8.5%, and firmness ratings improved. Activ'Inside, the maker of the supplement, sponsored the study [4].

A 2015 study in men

In 2015, an open-label study enrolled 47 men aged 30 to 45, and 41 of them finished. For 180 days, they took two tablets a day. Together, the tablets supplied 27.5 mg of grape seed extract, with marine protein, vitamin C, zinc and tomato extract [5].

Skin hydration improved, and so did skin density on ultrasound. Doctors and the men themselves rated hydration, radiance and overall appearance as better. The study also reported an increase in collagen and elastic fibers in the skin [5].

A 2025 trial of a grape seed serum

In 2025, a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial tested a serum with grape seed extract on the skin of 40 women for 12 weeks. Skin hydration improved in the serum group (serum study) [6].

Study summary
Study People What was taken Length Main result
Huang et al., 2024 [3] 70 women Grape seed extract with niacinamide, vitamins C and E 56 days Better skin tone and gloss than placebo
Dumoulin et al., 2016 [4] 35 women, 40–70 Grape seed extract with melon concentrate, vitamin C, zinc 8 weeks Luminosity up 25.9%; elasticity up 8.5%
Costa et al., 2015 [5] 47 men, 30–45 27.5 mg grape seed extract with four other ingredients 180 days Better hydration and skin density

How much grape seed extract is in Dermal Radiance compared with the studies?

Source Grape seed extract a day Notes
Dermal Radiance (2 capsules) 50 mg Standardized to 95% OPC, from the label [7]
2015 study in men 27.5 mg With four other ingredients, for 180 days [5]
2016 radiance study Not stated One 150 mg capsule of the full mix, for 8 weeks [4]
2024 trial Not stated For 56 days [3]

Dermal Radiance provides 50 mg of grape seed extract. This is more than the 27.5 mg used in the 2015 study. The other two reports do not state their grape seed amounts.

Dermal Radiance also contains niacinamide, vitamin C, vitamin E and zinc, which were part of the mixes in those studies [7]. Each study tested its own mix, so the results do not describe grape seed extract by itself or Dermal Radiance as a whole.

Food sources of OPCs

Proanthocyanidins are found in the seeds and skins of grapes [8]. Most people do not eat grape seeds, so an extract is the usual way to get a measured amount.

What the research does not show yet

  • We found no human trial of grape seed extract by itself, taken by mouth, that measured skin outcomes.
  • Two of the three studies by mouth had no placebo group [4][5].
  • The 2024 trial is a conference abstract, and it does not give the amounts in the formula [3].
  • We found no study of the full Dermal Radiance formula.

Safety and interactions

Grape seed extract is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth [1]. Stomach upset is the unwanted effect that has been reported [2].

Grape seed has some antiplatelet activity, which means it may add to the effect of blood-thinning medicines such as warfarin [2]. It may also change how the body handles some medicines that are processed by an enzyme called CYP3A4 [2].

Little is known about the use of grape seed extract during pregnancy or breastfeeding [1].

Good to know Grape seed extract comes from a familiar food, and it is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth [1]. A few points can help you use it well:
  • Take it with a meal, as the label directs [7].
  • Give it time. The studies above ran from 8 weeks to 6 months [3][4][5].
  • If you take a blood thinner or another prescription medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist before you take grape seed extract [2].

Grape seed extract is one part of Dermal Radiance

Dermal Radiance is a daily two-capsule supplement with 20 vitamins, minerals and plant extracts. They were chosen to support healthy collagen, skin firmness and elasticity, and radiance. Grape seed extract is one of them.

Dermal Radiance has not been clinically tested as a finished product. For this reason, we cannot say how its ingredients work together. The studies in this article tested other mixes that contained grape seed extract.

If you take Dermal Radiance, you are not relying on grape seed extract alone. It is one of 20 ingredients in each serving. Every ingredient and amount is listed on the label [7].

If you are deciding

Grape seed extract has human studies for skin tone, radiance and hydration, each time as part of a mix of nutrients [3][4][5]. Dermal Radiance uses it in the same way, as one of 20 ingredients. If you would like to try Dermal Radiance, the directions are two capsules a day with a meal [7].
